Mumbai, having covered a pretty wide range of area and having been the house to various kinds of people of different faiths and beliefs, religions, features a mixed culture. With all the variations of habits and customs, culture in Bombay has its own charm that is unique in its kind. The people of Bombay, called the Mumbaikars or the Bombayites, live very fast going lives. The majority of these Mumbaikars are very liberal minded. The cosmopolitan city of Mumbai often sticks to certain concepts that are taboos in other parts in the country.

Marathi, the mother tongue of nearly half of the whole population of Bombay, is the official language in the city. There are numerous people of different languages, who have immigrated to the city. They speak the regional Hindi which they are used to. As a result, a new dialect has come into being that seems to be the commonest and the most popular medium of conversations. It is referred to as the Bambaiya hindi.
Food in Mumbai, an important part of culture in Bombay are of a number of variations. The Mumbaikars are found to be very fond of the South Indian Cuisines and the Chinese food. The roadside junk foods like vada pavs and bhelpuri are very popular among the Mumbai people. They also like delicious Korean, Lebanese, Mexican and Thai dishes. In addition to the Indian and Chinese restaurants, you will also find Punjabi, Mughlai and continental restaurants in a fairly large number, scattered in all about Bombay.
Western and Indian festivals and celebrations are observed in Mumbai. Culture in Bombay includes festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, Navratri, Dussera, Id, Christmas, Holi, Good Friday, Muharram, Maha Shivratri and Ganesh Chturthi. One if the most important and popular festivals in Mumbai is Ganesh Chaturthi. In fact, it is an essential part of the culture in Bombay. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, one of the great Indian freedom fighters, initiated this festivals with the purpose to unify the people.
Art is another important part of culture in Bombay, like that of any other culture. One very interesting thing about Bombay culture is that it includes a wide range and variety of arts. Singing, dancing, painting, playing musical instruments, acting, film making are all included in culture in Bombay. There are a large number of theaters and art galleries in Bombay. Bollywood, the principal film industry of the country of India, is in the city of Mumbai. In addition to the rock and international pop music, Marathi, Indi-pop and Indian classical music are also very popular in Mumbai. |
